animal sounds

Here's a tiny little video of Jasper doing his animal sounds this morning.

The penguin is my favorite- we taught him that a penguin goes "waddle waddle waddle."

Playdate at Sarah's

It was our Easter theme aka "Jesus party" at Sarah's monthly playdate today and I snapped a few pics of the precious kiddos playing together and learning about Jesus.

Here, Sarah is explaining why Jesus is even better than a superhero.

This is Calvin, Sarah's middle child.

Cousins, getting caught playing on the iphone.

Jasper, distracted by a bird.

Coloring the book Sarah made each child.

Sweet Sam.

Drawing bugs on the cross.

Most of the kiddos; we're missing Ivee and Sam.

Sweet Ivee bug.

On a completely separate note, this morn marks a milestone. This morning is when Jasper first learned how to do his baby powder all by himself (unbeknownst to me). Then, like all good boys would, he decided to eat it.

a few Jasper-isms

This post is totally boring and it's just b/c I don't want to forget some of the things going on in Jasper's life right now. I'm also in a huge hurry, so everything's going to have bad grammar and be misspelled. I just don't want to forget....

- he pronounces his name "Baber" and says it all the time. IE "Baber's spoon. Baber's ork. Baber's cup." Sometimes, if he's not sure if something is his or not, he asks me in the sweetest, high-pitched tone, "Babers???"

- the most special treats that Jasper enjoys right now: smarties, watching dump truck videos on youtube, watching helicopter videos on youtube, taking snoopy for a walk on the street, pushing his cart on the street, going outside after dinner and looking for the moon.

- he mimics everything I do. If sit down on the floor crosslegged, he sits down right beside me, hips touching, with his legs crosslegged. If I throw my head back and laugh, he does the same. If I say "wow!", he instantly says, "WOOW!!!". He mimics EVERYTHING! It's so so cute and completely humbling, because he is VERY quick to mimic the bad things I do, too.

- one bad thing I do: if I stub my toe, run into the wall, drop my phone, etc, I always always always instinctively say, "Oh shoot." Of course, Jasper has picked up on that instantly. So whenever he drops anything or does anything bad or sees me drop something, he says, "OHH doot! oh doot! Oh doot!" and I say, "Oh no! oh shoot (instinctively)! Oh Jasper! Don't say 'shoot'!" and he says, "Oh Baber! Doot! Baber! Oh doot!!" While I don't want him saying "shoot", it's absolutely adorable. Sometimes my heart just squeezes wtih how cute it is.

- Jasper is 100% a nurturer. He LOVES to take care of his toys, of babies he sees in the grocery store. He loves to give hugs. He gives hugs to everyone and everything! Recently, we found a tiny, crusty dead gnat on his window sill. Well, it's rocked his world. for the last 3 days, he's given this dead gnat his binky, froggy, food, wipes, a clean diaper, kisses, hugs, food, bran flakes, etc. He cares for this gnat better than most ppl care for their own family. he lives and breaths to take care of this gnat.

- typical meals= breakfast is branflakes and oatmeal. lunch is kidney beans straight from the can and carrot sticks. snack is oyster crackers and raisins. dinner is normally a nice, warm, healthy dinner. bed time snack is yogurt. Every once in a while, Jas can have a couple fruit loops for a special treat. Or smarties.

- We came home from bsf yesterday and I asked Jasper what he did in his class. He responded, "singing!! ah ah ah ah ah!" (his "ah ah ah's" was him singing.)

- he loves to play but he MUST be in the same room as me or he has meltdowns. He's getting better though.

- Because of our 3 walks a day, most of the neighborhood knows and loves Jasper.

- Jasper loves to pretend things are huge. He pronounces it, "oooge." and he walks around, carrying a tiny little pebble, acting like he's straining really hard to carry it, and says, "oooge. oooge! oooge!!" all the time.

I'll add more later, so many little things I don't want to...

oh wait! another one:
- Jasper loves to be the one to pray at meal time. His prayer is always the same and is:

"Dear God. Thank you for this food. I love you. Amen." but it comes out like this:

"God. food. Wuv ooo. Men!!" Melts my heart every.single.time.

Ok- more later.

oh wait. He LOVES birds and squeels with joy when he gets to see one. He says, at the top of his lungs, "Bwurd! Bwurd! I love how he says bird.

- last one. This mondya morn, he woke up and realized that he can put 2 or more words together at the same time. Now he's talking with multiple words and makes almost a whole sentence at times. love it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
a few more:
- When I ask Jasper what song he wants me to sing, he either says Bus, Baber, Ohhh!, or saved. he loves having me sing and is always asking for one of those 4 songs.
aka:
- bus = The Wheels on the Bus
- Baber = Jesus Loves the Little children (but I say the little "Jasper's" instead of little children)
- Ohhh! = Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Ohhh my soul... Worship His holy name. (10,000 reasons)
- Saves = Jesus, You have saved me. Taken all my sin, all my sin away. (My God I have not chosen You)
- When out and about driving, I'll say, "Jasper, what street comes 1st when we're going home?" he says, "Broad street!!" and I'll say, "then what do we turn on?" and he says. "Ampton Street" (aka Southampton Street), and then I say, "And what's on Southampton Street?" and he says, "HOME!!!!"
- Jasper loves to divide his bran flakes into 2 piles. One pile is all the circles and 1 pile is all the ovals. He does a spectacularly good job at differentiating between all the circles and all the ovals.
Music time
Almost every day, Jasper and I have "music time", which is when we play the piano and the guitar, with the hope of cultivating a love of music in the little guy. Well, Jasper absolutely loves music now,  much to my delight, and I got the chance to snap a few pics today while he was banging away on the old ivory keys. :o)
The pope
All day yesterday, I excitedly talked with Jasper about the new pope and the election process taking place in the Vatican City, the bells ringing, the smoke from the smokestack, the ballots, etc.. and all of that happening even as we talked!!! I talked and talked about the pope and built it up with great excitement, wonder, and awe. All day.
Come to find out, the whole day he thought I was talking about poop.
yeah, I shoulda seen that one coming.
Once I figured out that Jasper thought I was talking about poop, I began the adventurous task of explaining to Jasper the difference between the pope and poop.
It went something like this:
me- "So... poop is... well, poop is.. hmm... poop is poop. You know poop, right?"
Jasper-  "Poop! Poop!!!!" indeed he does know poop well. :o)
me- "Ok. Well, poop is poop. But the pope is not poop. The pope is in charge of all the Catholic Church and he lives in the Vatican City in Rome and talks to the Cardinals a lot and holds very important services."
me- "Vatican City. Can you say Vatican City with me?? Let's try it together. Va..ti...can...Ci..ty..."
Jasper- "poop!"
me- "No, the pope is not the same as poop. The pope is in the Vatican City. Can you say 'Vatican City'?"
Jasper- ...blank stare... his head is cocked to one side and he can tell that what I'm saying is very important to me, and I can tell that he is trying very hard to figure out what I'm saying. He's trying really, really hard to comprehend, but nothing is dawning yet.
I try again.
me- "ok. poop is... well, it's poop. But the pope is.... hmm (at this point I'm trying really hard to find a way to bring it down to his level)... the pope is a little guy who wears a red robe."
Jasper- "Pope!! Guy!! Red Robe!!!!"
Jasper is elated! He can finally understand what I'm talking about. And indeed he does understand about a little guy who wears red robes. Jasper understands "guy." He delights in identifying who's a guy and who's a girl (at the top of his lungs) while shopping at Khols. He understands "red" because half his smarties are red and he lives and dies for smarties. He understands "robe" because we just went shopping for a robe at Khols!! This is perfect!!
I felt like the mommy of the year. Jasper is going around, chanting "pope!! red robe!! guy!!"
In that moment, I was sure that I was raising up a baby genius and had visions of him entering college at age 6 and getting his doctorate at age 9. After all, he's a 22 month old toddler who knows what a pope is!! I was so proud of us both. Mommy of the year, indeed!
That moment, however, was very and extremely fleeting when the next words out of Jasper's mouth were to ask if the "pope guy pooped".
Again, I shoulda seen that one coming.
These are random pics of Jas, aka "baby genius", playing with his magnifying glass this morn.
Snow day!!
We woke up to a winter wonderland this morning; absolutely beautiful!! I had high hopes of romping in the snow with Jasper, teaching him how to throw snowballs, making snow angels, etc. So we bundled up, which took us half an hour, ventured outside, and we both were absolutely in heaven!!! I love. love. love snow. Absolutely love it.!
But why was Jasper in heaven, you ask?? Was it the snow?? The white fluffy stuff practically begging to be played in???
Nope. No way. Nada.
He was in heaven because he saw his cart. His cart!!!! Can you believe it?? His cart. He's had this cart for almost a year and has pushed it every day for almost a year. This cart is not a new toy. This cart is an old, beat up toy that is very common around here. We see and push his cart all the time. I can't believe that with all our winter wonderland around us, Jasper still only wanted his cart!!
Not only did he not want to play in the snow, he got drastically freaked out if the snow even touched him. BUT.... his strong will came bursting out in all it's ugly glory and he insisted on pushing his cart on the street (a new-ish activity for him). So... with 10 inches of snow, all schools and some businesses in Columbus canceled, a thick layer of ice, freezing cold temperatures, and bundled up like a little Eskimo, Jasper pushed his cart down our street. Mind you, there very few other vehicles or bikes of any kind driving around our neighborhood due to the treacherous conditions, but there was Jasper, pushing his cart.
Did he go a little ways? nope. Did he just go around the block? nope. He went over 1 mile!! I couldn't believe it!!! It was tough going pushin' that crazy cart through blizzard-like conditions, but like I said, he has a strong will and was quite determined. Even though I let Jasper push his cart for over 1 mile, he stilled cried like crazy when I made him go inside.
He's now completely zonked out in his crib. For hopefully a long while. Poor little guy is quite tuckered out.
Joe
Andrew and I made an agreement months, if not years, ago: when we make a promise to our children, keep it no matter the cost. We want Jasper to be able to trust us wholeheartedly, with no reservations. Jasper's first impressions of God the Father will be based upon his impressions of us; God always keeps His promises to us, and we want to always keep our promises to Jasper.
As a result, we don't make very many promises; we normally say things like, "If we're able to, we will go to the park after lunch. But we'll have to see if it works out or not." Things like that.
Well, I made Jasper a promise today. I actually made him the same promise multiple times this afternoon.
Then I broke it. Then only because of God's gracious reminder, I was able to keep the promise.
The result is we now own a very, very obnoxiously loud and very expensive dog toy.
(After we bought said dog toy, I told Jasper he needed a name. I asked Jasper what he wanted to name him and Jasper said, "poop." I decided on executive veto and gave Jasper the option between "Joe" and "Bob". Jasper chose Joe. The dog toy will be referred to as Joe for simplicity reasons.)
Meet Joe:
So here's the story of Joe:
We were at the store with our dear neighbor Kathy and her son, Sam, when  Jasper found a very, very loud dog toy at the store that he instantly fell in love with. He rarely falls in love with toys at stores. Very rarely. But this particular gaudy Joe capture his heart, soul, and mind. It was in the $1.75 bin with tons and tons of the same toy, so I naturally assumed Joe was $1.75. Since Jasper so completely fell in love with gaudy, loud, obnoxious Joe, it kinda melted my heart; I figured that poor Jasper doesn't have any pets or siblings, and he's such an affectionate little guy, so I told Jasper I would buy Joe for him, but he couldn't play with Joe until we got in the car and were going home (Joe was so loud it was making Kathy's son cry). We then shopped for an hour and 15 minutes and Jasper was so, so, so patient. He would look longingly at Joe (I placed Joe far out of his reach in the cart) and then say, "Car. Home. Car. Home." And I would say, "that's right baby. You can play with Joe when we get in the car and are headed home."
And we went through this routine many times.
Well, as I'm sure you've already guessed, Joe cost more than $1.75. A whole lot more. So as we were checking out, I saw the actual price of Joe and my eyes popped out of my head. I told that cashier, "no thanks." and got Jasper a small, plastic, and very silent dinosaur instead which cost about a dollar. Instantly, the Holy Spirit started working on my heart a little bit, but I kept thinking, "There is no way I'm paying that much money for something that's going to drive me crazy. Give me 5 minutes and I'll have Jasper so distracting by dirt or helicopters that he'll completely forget about Joe. Plus, I got him a dinosaur."
Well, I got Jasper loaded up in the car, I got buckled in, started the car, and Jasper started excitedly asking for Joe. Begging for it. With such excitement and hope and anticipation on his face. And that's when it hit me: I was about to break my word to Jasper. The price of the dog toy was totally, ridiculously expensive, but the value of being a mom who keeps her word to the best of her ability is absolutely priceless. It's worth everything in the world.
Thank goodness for the Holy Spirit.
So, I unloaded myself, unloaded Jasper, and not wanting Andrew to have to pay for my "parenting mistake", I unloaded most of what I just purchased. Dragged us all back inside. Returned most of what I just bought to help "counteract" the price of Joe. Walked Jasper back to the farthest corner of the store located somewhere near Siberia, showed him all the "Joe's", let him pick his favorite, bought the Joe, and finally got us home.
We've had Joe for a very short time, yet Jasper has given him countless kisses, countless hugs, literally shoved 3 animal crackers down his throat, got him a cup of water because he was thirsty, checked for his heart beat, felt his feet to see if his feet were cold and needed socks, and tucked him in for a nap. I delight in seeing Jasper's joy for his new Joe, but even more, I delight that the Lord reminded me the importance of keeping my word to Jasper.
If you're quiet and listen, I'm sure you can hear Joe from where you are. He's the loudest thing known to man.
(as a side note, the cashier who did my returns commented on how weird it was the I bought stuff and 1 minute later was returning it. It was a good opportunity to share with her why I was returning it all and the importance of being a parent who keeps her promises.)
Checking Joe's feet to see if he needs socks.
Giving Joe water.
 Seeing if Joe is sleepy and needs a nap.
