the garden is planted- despite the fire ants

The garden is planted!!! Yay!! it was seriously so. much. fun.

The only non-fun part happened in the middle of the day, when I went to spread the Miracle Grow soil on top of our regular soil. I dumped half the bag in the garden plot, swept my hand around in it to start spreading it around, and all of a sudden, fire ants just started exploding out of the garden plot. Thousands started instantly swarming everywhere. I screamed, grabbed Brody who was digging in the dirt with me, and ran all the way up to the front yard.

Praise the Lord, neither of us got bit. But I spent a few hours trying to drowned and/or poison these little flesh eaters (aw man... my skin and scalp are itching even as I write this... I have imaginary fire ant syndrome). I also spent that time trying to keep Brody from eating that poison... so it was a bit eventful. Definitely nothing that I had encountered in Ohio before.

But thankfully, the fire ants are all gone and my garden got planted. Gardening is my greatest "extracurricular" joy in life. It soothes my heart and soul like nothing else does.

As the famous quote goes, "Gardening- it's cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes."

My little helper

 a few tomato plants

And... how many pics does it take to get a decent one??
sometimes, quite a few

and... I think this is the best one we got.

  1. Yippee! I am so happy for you and the fact that your garden is in! I guess living in GA you get about a month head start from us. I am sad to report I will not be growing a garden this year and it hurts to say that....Long story! We got new neighbors last year and they have a dog - I like to plant my garden along the fence that meets next to their back yard. Well after getting everything and I mean everything planted last year I saw their dog come out and well he did his business all over my plants! I could not handle it! So I dug everything up and put it in buckets - away from the fence! Let's just say they did not do well...So this past fall we planted iris all along the fence and they are going to be beautiful but I know this it isn't the same! So I am hoping that by next summer we will have made a plot in the backyard for me to garden in....

Your boys are growing so darn fast! Enjoy every minute (I know you are)....

    Happy Gardening!
